My Simple Fairy Garden from the Dollar Tree

Hi all! I have just a short and simple post for you today. This is something that’s been around for awhile, but it took me a bit to get on board. For one thing, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on the pieces. Well, the Dollar Tree fixed that! I found the green bowl, the house and the bench at the local Dollar Tree. The plants and the mushroom (not shown here) are from the 99 Cent Store. The topiary came from Holly Lobby last year on clearance, I think it was $1.77. The piece of doorknob came from my own stash.

First I drilled holes in the bottom of the bowl so the water would drain and not sit in the bottom. After drilling the holes, I filled the bowl with potting soil and then the fun of putting the pieces in!

I added the plants, a primrose and a couple of succulents, to the back of the bowl. I also placed the mushroom in the back since it is taller.

Then I added the house, bench and topiary and finished with the doorknob in the front like a little rock for the fairy to sit on.

I hope I can find more pieces to add later. It will be fun to see what else I can find!

I will definitely be visiting the Dollar Tree more often to see if they have more pieces. Have a great week!

99 Cent Store St. Patrick’s Day

Hello everyone!  I hope you all enjoyed our Facebook Live last Friday!  If you missed it, you can check it out on Hometalk’s Facebook!

Also, I know what you are thinking.  ‘Lauren, you did a 99 Cent Store Valentine’s Day, why are you now doing St. Patrick’s Day?’  Well, first of all, it’s the 99 Cent Store, what can go wrong?  And second of all, everything is only 99 cents, so you can buy tons of stuff!

So, of course with Valentine’s over, the next special holiday is St. Patrick’s Day!  Or, Easter if you don’t really care about St. Patrick’s Day.  But, this holiday is perfect for Decorating with the Pantone Color of the Year: Green!

Naturally, I bought two garlands that were green with shamrocks.  They look really cute all wound around the ends of the bookshelf.  And of course, the cats were soooooooo helpful while I was trying to decorate.

Next is this cute shamrock cut out sign.  I got two of the in the pack, but I only ended up hanging one.  I love how the middle is gold and the rest is green and sparkly!

Then I got a green garland shamrock hanging….thing.  I don’t really know what to call it, but it looks really cute under our message board.  Yes, we did have something else there for Valentine’s Day, but why not switch it out for a different holiday.

Next, we of course have coins!  I got green and gold plastic coins and scattered them around the table.  Honestly, the cats will probably enjoy them after the holiday.

And finally, the part that the cats hated the most.  I, of course, saw these little plastic hats and had to buy them.  For the cats and for no other reason.

And of course they hated me while I was attempting to take pictures.  Target looks absolutely adorable, but Amelia not so much.  She didn’t like how it looked on her I guess.

Little Vintage Jewelry Box

Good morning! Are you enjoying a 3 day weekend or are you working today? We have President’s Day today to celebrate President Washington and Lincoln’s birthday. I even talk about it with my preschoolers. They actually have a pretty good memory for it all. It’s always great to see what they actually retain.

I received this jewelry box from my mom. It had been hers. I have had it for quite a while and finally decided what I was going to do with it. It always takes me the longest time to decide. There are just too many choices! But as I was going through my jewelry, I realized I had quite a few costume jewelry rings. I had them all in a small bowl, but it was hard to see what I had, so I decided to make this box a ring holder.

I started by cutting dowels the length of the top and bottom shelf. The fabric I used is white flannel, but I think a vintage material would look really nice. I just didn’t have any on hand when I started this project.

I cut strips of flannel long and wide enough to roll the dowel up in.

vintage-jewelry-box-dowel

I folded in the ends and then rolled the dowel up in the flannel.

I didn’t glue mine, but you certainly could. Mine ended up having a tight enough fit that I didn’t need any glue to keep them in place.

Once your pieces are rolled up, place them in your box.

I used the edge of a scissor to tuck the edges in.

For the bottom, I wanted a small shelf to lay some of my brooches on. I found that a butter box was the perfect fit! I ran some glue on it and covered it with the same white flannel.

I place the butter box in the back and then added 3 more rolls in the front.

Now it was time to add the bling!

I love being able to see all my rings at the same time and not have to dig through a bowl to find the one I want.

I don’t wear brooches very often, but these are some of my favorites.

I’m glad I got this project done. One more thing accomplished and a little more organized! We are still plugging along on the house updates. We have flooring in the main bathroom now and I painted the inside of the front door this weekend. I will be sharing soon!

Decorating with the Pantone Color of the Year: GREEN!

Hello everyone!  I am extremely sorry for not posting last week.  I am so forgetful in my old age.

I’m only 22, but sometimes I feel like I’m 50 with how often I forget stuff.

Did you know that Pantone has a color of the year?  Yeah, it’s a real thing!  And this year’s color is representative of rebirth and new life.  It also represent vitality, which is perfect in the upcoming spring season.

So, the Pantone color of 2017 is Greenery!  Which, is not a top color for me, but mom decorates with it all the time.  So, I am going to show you how to add more green to her formal living room.  If you don’t remember what it looks like, click on the picture below to check it out.

First of all, look at these awesome chairs! They are modern and chic, and I’m pretty sure they would look great in any room.  I love the modern look and they would look great with a dark wooden table.

But you know what these chairs would look great under???  How about some green lampshades!  Why not change out the blue printed lantern shades with these awesome green ones!

Now what about on the table?  How can we make these beautiful lanterns look even better and more GREEN???

How about adding green fairy lights???  They add mystical lighting to any room.  Or, it makes it more festive for St. Patrick’s Day!

Did you know that small changes can give a room new life?  You could keep all of you white modern dishes and add something cute like this green chevron tablecloth to turn a room from ultra modern to fun and funky!

You can also change up some of the pieces that you hang on the wall to change the style of the room.  One of the things you can use to cover more space is hang a tapestry.  Here is a beautiful mandala tapestry that covers a lot of wall space.

Or you can hang a new funky wreath on your wall!  Did you know wreaths aren’t only meant for doors? You can also cut branches from your trees or bring plants in to not only bring in green, but add some other color!

Now what about the day bed that all the animals love to sleep on?

sweet-something-valentines-living-room-daybed-red-heart-rozy

How about some green pillows?  Did you know that switching out your pillows can change up the feeling in the room?  Just changing your pillows can change the entire look of the room!

Or maybe a green quilt?

OR MAYBE you put another throw blanket to put on top of the quilt.  Did you know that adding multiple blankets makes the space look cozier and comfier?

And, how about instead of the dog sleeping on the bed, they get their own green bed???

There are so many possibilities with the color green!  I hope that this has given you lots of new ideas for how to decorate with the color green!

Scrabble Tile Spring Sign

Good morning! We are having some beautiful weather today, at least until the next rain storm comes in. But that’s okay, we need it! Are you ready for Valentine’s Day? I  know my preschoolers are very excited. We hope to be able to have some fun tomorrow at school.

This weather feels like spring, so I thought I would start a spring project. I still have  quite a few pieces of this painted wood and I found some scrabble-like letters in my scrapbooking stash, so I decided to put them together. I came up with some spring-like words and tried to keep them about the same length, but some are longer than others. I started by laying them out on the board.

scrabble-letter-spring-sign

I figured out I would need 3 inches between the bottom of one line of letters and the top of the next. I used a ruler and drew lines across so I would know where to line up the letters.

I added a line of glue just below the pencil line and started gluing on letters, making sure they were centered. I didn’t measure for the center, I just eyeballed it, but you can certainly do that.

total aside: I did change the spelling of blossoms!

I had some blank spots where I had to fill in, so I found some cute spring flowers from my scrapbooking stash too and after playing with it for a bit, found the right combinations. I ended up using only the yellow and pink.

I placed it on my mantle with a cute little bird who is ready for spring too!

I made the spring banner a couple of years ago and thought is was the perfect touch across the window.
