Sum Sum Summertime Backyard

It’s officially summer! The preschool I teach at is now in its summer session! No more curriculum! Yippee! Just fun stuff now, like water play and field trips. To celebrate, I invited the other teachers to come to my house for an ice cream social. Just a casual get-together to relax and enjoy each others company. Since I haven’t really shown you my patio yet, I figured this was the perfect opportunity! You saw a little bit with Haley’s graduation party, but this is how it looks most of the time. I still used a few of the decorations because they fit my color scheme too.

I am searching for a great old table, but this folding one does for now. I added the new chairs I bought at Junk Days (I haven’t recovered them yet) and a few other wooden chairs from the house. I covered the table with a turquoise and white tablecloth and a runner of turquoise, blue and lime green. My husband didn’t want the tool tray anymore, so I snagged it and painted it! I added a little burlap, some seashells and a few other baubles.

Off to the side, I have a potting table my husband and I built out of old pickets from a neighbors fence. It took me about a year to come up with something to make, but I love this table! We have used it for so many things, but it usually holds drinks for parties. This party was just water, since we were having ice cream!

I added some chrysanthemums I received from one of my students and placed them in my old wooden ice cream bucket from my grandma.

Love this bucket and the flowers look just right!

There is also a wooden star and a chalkboard sign letting everyone know this is the drink station!

I’ve collected a few hanging lamps over the years, so I hung them from a branch in the tree above. 2015 backyard 5 Next to the table is an old bike I have had for years. When the kids were little, I had their little seat on it and we went for bike rides. Miss those days! 2015 backyard 6 Here’s the other old bike I have. This was my dad’s when he worked at an oil refinery here in my town. He rode this trusty bike all over to get from one side of the site to the other. I brought it home last year, touched up the bright yellow paint, and display it in my yard. I love that this belonged to him and I can have a piece of that history.

On this side we have the seating area. I received the iron furniture from my mother-in-law, but the cushions were not my style. So I bought some outdoor fabric and recovered them. This is not as time-consuming as it sounds, because I use hot glue, no sewing involved. I showed how this is done here. 2015 backyard 11 2015 backyard 14

I love the sayings on this pillow. I sums up summer for me!

This bowl contains rocks we have collected from the different places we have traveled to. I have the place and date written on the rocks. It’s a fun way to relive some of those great times together!

This deck is right outside our back door. A friend helped Steve build it about 3 years ago, and it’s been wonderful. It’s a great place to sit and relax at the end of a busy day.

The sun has gone down and now the lights are on. I love how it looks at this time of the evening. It has great ambience and it feels peaceful. The long day is done.

This picture is a little dark, but you can see all our delicious toppings for our ice cream. Everyone brought a topping, while I supplied the ice cream. It was scrumptious!

Well, the party is over, but I will leave you with this last photo. I picked up this broken chair and spray painted the seat with chalkboard paint. Now we can announce where the party is and when it’s time to go home.

UPCYCLE RETRO PET BED

I hope you all had a good week and weekend! My preschool had their graduation this past week which is always a lot of work but so exciting for the kids! Each class is unique (this one was very talkative!), but also special. They will be missed!

I had hoped to reveal our ‘Dressing up a Dresser’ post, but things didn’t quite go as planned. It still needs a little more work, plus we tried fitting in shopping for a car, changing around my bedroom (which I will post in a couple of weeks) and Lauren ending up being called into work. So today I am sharing a pet bed I made for my Chica before I was blogging. I don’t have too many pictures and they aren’t that great, but I love this little bed, so I wanted to share!

I started out with an old discarded tv stand. It was black and at one time it had doors. I picked out some retro fabric from Lauren’s stash and found some pink pom pom ball trim too. Chica is definately a girly girl, so we needed the pink and some pom poms!

I painted the tv stand white and added the little pom poms around the front opening. I sewed up the fabric as a pillow cover so I could take it off and wash it. I used an old pillow to stuff it with. I even sewed a long one to line the back with.

Cozy and comfy!

She does use it, usually when the weather is cold, but it is a nice special spot just for her (sometimes she has to share it with the cat!).

I love it when I can take something someone else is throwing away and make something new and useful out of it. Have you tried anything like this? I would love to have you share! Have a great week!

Coming Soon! Dressing Up a Dresser

So, I’ve been a bit busy with work picking up.  Since it is summer, and everyone is leaving on vacation, they drop their dogs off at my work where it is my duty to help take care of them.  And even though I like having more hours at work, I now have to find a bit more time for the blog. Because of this, I am giving a sneak peak into what we will be showing off next week.  It is nothing special, but it was a fun project for my mom and I.

We have some work to do!

We have some work to do!

We found this dresser for free on Craiglist and picked it up right away.  We knew there were some problems with it, like mismatched handles and peeling paint and a broken drawer.

It’s taken awhile but I think we finally have a plan of what we want to do with it. We bought some new drawer pulls at the junk sale we went to last weekend and the drawer has been fixed. Now on to the fun part!  We will let you know how it turns out! Stay tuned!

We Went Junking (and Some Other Shopping Too!)

I was looking for something different to do for this Memorial Weekend, but it seemed like I was just going to do some mundane chores around the house. My husband was going to be working at the softball park, Lauren wasn’t coming home and Haley just wanted to watch her videos. Boring!!! Then as my husband was watching a local baseball game on tv, there was an advertisement for ‘Junk Days’ in a nearby town. Bingo! Something fun and different to do! Lauren was game, Haley was undecided, and I texted one of my friends from work to see if she wanted to go. She hasn’t been able to drive for awhile, so she is pretty much stuck at home. She was more than ready for a day out!

After church, we headed out. After a short stop at Starbucks, we picked up Lauren and drove over to the ‘Junk Days.’ This was one of Lauren’s first finds of the day. We didn’t purchase it, but it sure is fun to dream and get ideas!

Lovin' the pink!

Lovin’ the pink!

I have been wanting a rectangle shape table, preferably a trestle table, for my back patio. Just the other night I was thinking it would be cute to get some different wooden chairs, paint them the same color and put around the table. Well, I found the chairs! Aren’t they adorable!  I scored five for $20!!

I will change out the burlap, not because I don’t like burlap, but it would be a little itchy when wearing shorts!

There was also a booth advertising all the benefits of chalk paint. Look at the truck!! It is completely painted with chalk paint! It is so awesome!!

I want this!!!

We also stopped in the store that carried the chalk paint. They hold classes and sell everything you would need to paint. It was so cool! They had this map hanging in there. I love maps! They also had an upholstered chair painted with chalk paint. Amazing!

The last really cool thing we found, because the place was full of cool stuff, was this dresser. The drawers were painted to look like suitcases, complete with hardware!

This is so clever!

After our ‘junking’ we stopped for lunch and a little more retail therapy. We were browsing Kirklands and found these little initial blocks. They were on clearance and the only ones left just happened to have all of our initials! So random!!

Great girls day out!

We had such a fun time! Sometimes you just need a day out with the girls! I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day and a great week!

How to Turn Baking Pans into Chalkboards

Sorry that this post is late.  I have been busy with finals, work, and getting ready for Haley’s graduation on Saturday.  But I digress.

I have seen these chalkboards online and made one for myself, so I have decided to post how to turn a simple baking pan into a chalkboard.

First thing you need is these baking pans.  I bought these three at a thrift store for 10 cents each.  What a deal, right?

I have 3 pans here, but I only ended up using 2

Next I painted the pan.  I wasn’t too particular if the paint for the outside of the pan got on the inside because it would be painted over anyways.  I chose pink and turquoise as my outside colors.  Shocking isn’t it.

Next, I taped off the edges of the pan to protect the color and not get chalkboard paint on the outside.  This was a little tricky because I wanted to cover the entire edge of the pan.  So I had to use quite a few pieces of tape to cover the edges.

Now, it’s time for the chalkboard paint!  I sprayed the inside of the pan completely to get a nice coat of chalkboard on the pan.

And Voila!  They are done.

Voila!

Voila!

I decided to make a checklist on the turquoise pan of things that need to still be finished before the graduation and graduation party.  Fortunately, I was able to mark one thing off already.  And the last two things won’t be able to be checked off until after the ceremony on Saturday.

GRADUATE!

GRADUATE!

For the second pan, I decided to put my salutation.  Because I love the saying and love pink, it worked perfectly.

These chalkboard pans are really easy to make and really easy to use.  I use chalk markers to write on them, and the chalk marker comes off with a wet washcloth so you can change what it says.  Check out my apartment bedroom blog here to see the chalkboard pan I have in my bedroom.
