Living Room Corner and Down the Hallway

My time off this summer is going by way too fast! I feel like I still have too much to get done! Remember the scrapbooking I was going to work on. Not happening! But I did manage to work on a couple of places in my house.

Back in February, I participated in a Finish-It-Up Challenge. One of the projects I worked on was to paint the trim in my hallway. I painted all the trim, plus 6 doors! Whew! That was a big job! I had hoped to get the walls done soon after, but it just didn’t happen. I finally found some light grey paint on the clearance spot at Walmart. I figured I would make it work. It still took a couple more months before I got the painting done, but it is finished!

I also got a new rug! I had been thinking about a sisal rug, but then decided I wanted more color since it is pretty dark in the hallway. My mom and I went shopping and found this one. I knew right away this was the one I wanted! Thanks Mom!

hallway update 2

There was a part of the wall that was peeling off. Well, it was scraped and sanded and then sprayed with texture. Then I was finally able to paint over it. It is not anywhere near perfect, but it sure is better!!

I really like how this space looks!

hallway update 3

While I was busy painting the hallway, I was chatting with Haley and asked what she thought of taking the dresser we just took out of her room and using it as a tv stand. She said, definately, yes! So in the middle of painting, I took a break and we moved furniture!

Here is the piece we took out! Haley started moving stuff before I could even stop painting and get the camara out! Yeah, this was from back in the day of very big tv’s!

After getting everything disconnected and moved out of the way, we took the old piece out. Boy, was it heavy! We could barely get it out the door! We managed to just get it out of the way and I said, good enough! Leave it there! It was much easier to move the dresser in!

We got this piece from our neighbors (thanks P & G) quite a few years ago. It has lived in both of the girls’ bedrooms and been painted several times too. We had just moved it out of Haley’s room about a month ago, but I really like it in here! We put movies and Wii games in the drawers. I added a bit of my beach decor too!

My last piece is this wonderful metal doggy I bought from Hobby Lobby! I have to have my little dog touches in each room!

I hope you enjoyed this little update and tour! Next week we will venture a little bit further down the hallway to my bedroom. I think it’s finally done (for now!)!

A New Dresser…Finally!

So…do you remember a few weeks ago that I posted about a dresser that I was going to be posting soon?  Yeah…life got in the way and it didn’t exactly happen soon.

But I finally got it finished!

If you haven’t read the before post, please click here.

Before and After

before and after

I love the new look on this dresser.  Before it was a weird eggshell whitish yellow, a drawer was broken, and there was peeling paint all over.  Now, it looks like it could fit anywhere in someone’s house.

But it wasn’t all easy.

The first problem I ran into was the broken drawer.  With the help of my dad, we were able to get that fixed.  He also helped me fix the bottoms of the drawers so they wouldn’t fall apart.

When I was painting the dresser, I also ran into the problem that the paint didn’t cover the peeling paint on the top of the dresser.  When I was using the spray paint, it was two different tones because the wood would just soak up the paint.  So, I had to use a can of black paint instead of spray paint.  Thankfully, that worked and made the top of the dresser look nice.

My final problem came when I tried to put the new knobs on.  The space between the screws was wider than the original knobs, so I had to remeasure to make new holes.  After filling in the original holes and drilling in new holes, I was finally able to put the new knobs on.  Yeah!

The Drawers

The Drawers

The featured part of this dresser is the drawers.  They are all chalkboard, so you can write what you have in each drawer (examples: socks, pants, checkbook, undisclosed amounts of money…too much?), or write numbers like I did.  Numbers are really in right now, so that is why I picked them.

Another feature this that every pull for the drawers is different.  I bought all five of them at Junk Days and they all worked perfectly.  It’s a great way to make the drawers unique.

I love how this dresser turned out.  It has a very modern feel and is something that I can see myself putting in my house when I have my own one day.  Now, if only I can figure out what to do with it in the meantime.:)

A Transformed Living Space

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is having a great week so far.  Just remember, tomorrow is Friday, also known as Friyay!

But, onto the blog.

Since I live with three other girls and our apartment came furnished, I never really did anything with the living room.  But after a year of living there, I realized how boring it was.

Before

Before

Another Before

Another Before

There was just a big empty space in the middle of the living room.  Now, it was nice when we were setting up the Christmas Tree because then we could put all of our decorations in the middle of the floor to see what we had.  But, other than that, it was just a big empty space in the middle of the floor.

Old Living Room

Our entry way was crowded by the large Papasan chair and the shoe rack next to the stairs.  If we had a lot of things that we were bringing in the door, we would have to be careful to not bang into one of these things.

Entertainment Center

Entertainment Center

This is the extent of the entertainment center in our living room.  We have all our DVDs and some minions to keep the TV company.  My roommates asked if the TV could stay where it was when I moved the living room around.  I happily obliged.

Board Games

This was the extent of our decorations in the living room besides the minions.  And it still isn’t very decoratvie or creative.  We couldn’t always see what games we had because they were facing the wrong way.  There is even one hidden in the back on the floor.

So, after moving all the furniture by myself, getting some decorations and some input from my roommates, I was finally able to transform the living room.

TADA!

TADA!

It looks much better!  It looks a lot more homey and somewhere that I would like to relax in.  None of the furniture is in the same place, so it took quite a bit of lifting.  Now, it isn’t complete, but this is what I have so far.  The couch and the loveseat switched places, the Papasan chair moved across the room, and the table in the corner became the centerpiece.  It looks great!

Centerpiece

I finally added some decor to the living room!  I bought two of the blue chevron boxes from Hobby Lobby for $2 a piece and have them on the two tables in the living room, the bird and the candle came from Kirklands for a good price, and we already had the pots with who knows what in them and the basket.  I’m trying to find mini disco balls to put in the basket.  Any ideas where to look?

I love you in the morning

My mom printed out this page from another blog, put it on the clipboard, and gave it to me for my birthday.  I thought it looked nice on the table.

Side table

The side table isn’t that exciting except that that we have two lamps, one of which is sitting on phone books because I couldn’t find anything else, and a decopauged candlestick.  WWWWHHHHOOOOHHHHOOOO…

Board Games

But, I did find a better way to organize the games.  Since Mall Madness was the biggest, I put it on the bottom and went from biggest box to smallest.  Taboo didn’t fit, so I placed it on the side as a book end.  It worked out perfectly.

New Living Room

Now that the living room has been moved around, the entry way is much emptier and easier to walk through.  Trust me, it is much easier to walk though this section with groceries than it was to walk through when the Papasan chair was there.  The shoe rack is better placed by the door and the minions don’t feel as crowded with the shoes next to them.

Now this picture is going to go up over the couch once I get a frame.  But I thought that you might enjoy looking at it.  The living room looks so much better and much more welcoming now that the furniture has been moved around.  I hope that you enjoyed my new and improved living room.  Hopefully, my roommates like it as much as you do! 🙂

My Luggage is Ready for Vacation

Well, here we are. Already into July! Where has time gone? I don’t feel like I have accomplished much yet! We have been camping and are planning another few days away in a couple of weeks. But my luggage wasn’t ready. Actually, the only luggage I had were some pieces my husband had recieved from work and they all had the company name on them. So cute and fashionable(sarcasm)!! Then I remembered I had  a suitcase I used to keep scrapbooking stuff in before I moved it into the big desk in Lauren’s room. I bought it years ago at a yard sale and it’s red, which is not my favorite color, but I figured I might as well do something with it. Maybe I could make it a little cuter! I looked around on Pinterest, but the only suitcases were vintage ones. Yeah, this is vintage…1990’s vintage! 🙂

Plain Jane

Plain Jane

Since the suitcase is red, I decided to go nautical. I tried to think what design would work and settled on an anchor. I found a design I liked on the computer and printed it out, but it was too big. I shrunk it down and printed again. This is where the mistakes began. I taped the pieces of my anchor together and then proceeded to cut out the wrong one! I cut out the bigger one instead! You see, in order to save paper, I printed out the smaller anchor on the back of the larger one. Maybe not such a good idea. 😦 luggage makeover 2 Well, I pieced it together as best I could and figured I would just add in the missing parts. First I tried rubbing chalk on the back of the anchor and then tracing over the design on the front. Failure! Tried again, this time tracing the front with a pencil instead of chalk. Double failure! My only other choice was to cut out my mutilated anchor as best as I could and then trace around it onto the suitcase. luggage makeover 3 I stuffed the suitcase with a couple of boxes and put a large scrapbook into the front pocket before starting the tracing to give me a hard surface..I used a black paint pen to trace. It actually came out pretty good! Surprise! I am no artist or painter, so this is pretty good for me! luggage makeover 4 Now I started coloring it in. I started with a navy blue paint pen. It worked okay, but didn’t really cover very well. I used white paint and a stiff bristled brush for the white rope. luggage makeover 5 After it had dried, I knew I needed something different for the blue. I used the same fabric paint I used when I painted my Skechers, Tulip Fabric Paint, Marine Blue. luggage makeover 6 This turned out much better! I let it dry overnight and then added another coat of each color in the morning. After that dried, I added the black outline again and the details to the rope. luggage makeover 7 I am actually pretty impressed at how well this turned out! luggage makeover 10 I did find a small anchor stamp at Michaels and tried stamping some small anchors in blue and white on the top pockets. They didn’t turn out very well, so I only did about 8. I outlined them with sharpie and called it good. luggage makeover 11 luggage makeover 8 I think my luggage and I are ready to go now! luggage makeover 12 My husband can use his own! 😉 luggage makeover 13 Sunshine and Blessings

My Closet Makeover

I’m finally back!  Nothing against the blog, but work has gotten me extremely busy and it has been hard to find time to write something for the blog.  But, I got a day off from work and finally found time to get something together…

My closet.

Closet Makeover

My closet is atrocious.  For more than one reason.

1. I have too many clothes and shoes. I need to go through them and get rid of some of my things.

2. I don’t have that much floor space because of all the shoes on my floor.

3. Even though I have the most clothes out of all of my roommates, I have the smallest closet.  That would be thanks to having the wonderful water heater in my closet.  Yeah…

Closet Makeover

So I took time go through my clothes.  I organize my shirts by color, so I took out the shirts by color and went through a process of getting rid of them.  My criteria to keep a shirt was: do I like it, is it long enough (I’m tall), does it still fit, and is it still fashionable.  I tried each shirt on unless I knew for a fact that it still fit.  I also went through dresses, skirts, and tank tops the same way.

Closet Makeover

I then went through the tee shirts that I own.  Now, I am proud to say that I have a very large black tee shirt collection, but I got rid of a few that I know don’t fit or that I don’t wear.  I also had some smocks that I had for work before we got new shirts that I was able to get rid of.

Now, the prized possession of my clothing, shoes.

A Mess in my Room

A Mess in my Room

Before I started, I took all the shoes out of my closet and off of my shoe hanger.  When I brought them out into my hallway to put on my staircase, I made quite a mess…thankfully I don’t have a downstairs roommate as of the moment, so it’s okay to make a mess.

A Mess in the Hallway

A Mess in the Hallway

But here are all my shoes.  All 60 pairs of them.

Closet Makeover

So I went through them and was able to take my shoes collection down from 60 pairs to 43.  Honestly, I am pretty proud of myself.  It is hard for me to get rid of shoes.

I still have a lot of shoes

I still have a lot of shoes

So, here is everything that I am getting rid of.

Closet Makeover

And here is what my closet looks like now!

Closet Makeover

Closet Makeover

There is actually space that I can walk on the floor and put new clothes in the closet.  I have my work shirts separated from my tee shirts so they don’t get lost, and I am able to add new things if needed. What a difference!

Have you gone through your closet and what kind of stuff you have gotten rid of?!
