Faux Flower Heart for Valentines

Good morning! Well, it’s the week for love! Do you have special plans for Valentine’s Day? Do you go out for a fancy dinner, or just stay home and enjoy being with your loved ones? We don’t want to fight with the crowds, so we typically stay in. We order a coupld of heart shaped pizzas, and call it good!

I posted this DIY last year and thought I would share it again for any new followers. I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s!

Lauren and I kind of came up with the same type of Valentine project and we hadn’t even talked about it ahead of time. A little scary! We both used silk flowers and mounted them, hers is on a canvas and mine is on a weathered board. You can see hers here. Anyways, I had a bunch of small boards that Lauren had painted awhile ago, plus some silk flowers in my stash and decided to try and put them together.

I pulled out the flowers I wanted to use, I chose pink,  and then decided on a grey board so the flowers would really stand out. I drew a heart on a piece of paper and then traced it onto the board so I would have a little bit of an outline to put my flowers in.

I did try this a couple of different ways, but ended up using just one type and color of flower. I was so busy gluing and placing flowers, I forgot to take any pictures during. Sorry! But it is pretty simple. I glued them really close together so they would be nice and tight. I even trimmed some of the petals to give it more of a heart shape. I think maybe smaller flowers with tighter petals would have worked better, but I still think this looks good.

I used a decorative stand to display it on and placed it my shelves in my dining room with my other pink decor.

This was really simple, but I think it looks nice and adds just a little special touch to the shelf.

DIY Driftwood Mirror

Good morning! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Mine was pretty quiet but nice to just spend some time at home.

DIY Driftwood Mirror Collage

I was able to get a couple of projects done. That doesn’t always happen around here! Last summer, our family went camping at the beach at a new-to-us campground. I waited too long and couldn’t get reservations anywhere else. Which happened to be a good thing! We loved this place! Our campsite was on the edge of the campground, so it was quiet and private. The best part, you walk through a winding path and find yourself on this beautiful beach! There were hardly any people on it and we practically had the place to ourselves. We were able to let the dogs run free and I am sure I saw a smile on Rozy’s face! Another great part-the beach was full of driftwood! A dream for me! The second day, I brought a big grocery bag down to the beach with me and filled it to the top! Thank you to my daughter Haley (@haley.smith2579) for these awesome pictures!

This is the recipe to clean driftwood if you should need it. My first project was a driftwood mirror. I have had this little mirror for several years and this was the perfect DIY. Here’s my laundry basket full of clean driftwood!

I cut out some cardboard to fit around the edge of the mirror. I wanted to add driftwood around it, but knew the edge had to be a little wider to support it. I first drew a pencil line around the mirror onto the cardboard and cut it out with a razor-blade. Then I cut out another wider circle, about 2 inches wide. This will give the driftwood the support it will need.

Not the straightest lines, but it won’t show after the driftwood is added. I did add some hot glue between the cardboard and the mirror to hold it in place.

Once this was done, I started picking out the pieces to use. I started with a first layer, using longer, bigger pieces. I used lots of hot glue! I placed another piece of driftwood down to lay the glued pieces on until the glue had time to harden.

Once the first layer was secure, I added some shorter pieces between the longer ones. This added so much depth and texture to the mirror!

I cleaned up all the glue strings and cleaned up the mirror and it was ready to hang!

I hung it in my dining area for now. I like it as part of the gallery wall, but I think I will eventually move it to the family room or bedroom.

Whenever we are at the beach and wander through the gift shops, I am always drawn to the driftwood items. I’m so happy I could make one of my own!

Now I hope I can come up with a few more ideas!

2018 Colors of the Year- Ultra-Violet and Oceanside

Have you heard about the different colors of the year? Several companies chose a color to be featured for each year. Pantone picked Ultra-Violet. I have to admit- purple is not one of the colors I use in my home or my clothing. It just isn’t something I am drawn to. I love it outside in the garden, but not in my home. But I did look up a few ways to use it as an accent in your home.

If ultra-violet is a color you absolutely love, how about going all out and getting this plush sofa? This would be quite the statement piece!

Or maybe something a little more subtle? These Charoite Glass Bottles are stunning!

I think pillows make a great accent piece and they are easy to change out when the season changes or your decor changes. This Mongolian Fur pillow looks so cozy!

Sherwin-Williams color of the year is Oceanside. Now this is my color! It just makes me want to be on a warm beach somewhere with the sand in my toes and the sun shining down. This would be great as an accent piece color and would really liven up the room!

How about this great Armless Chair? This actually has other piece and can be made into a full sofa.

For a smaller accent piece, here is the beautiful Glacier Glass Vase from Raymour and Flanigan. I love the mix of colors all through the vase.

These Teal Dot Velvet Pillows look so glamorous and would be the perfect addition to the Oceanside color.

How about some color in you bedroom? This Pinched Pleat Teal Comforter would be perfect!  I love the pinched pleat. It makes a great detail.

I hope you enjoyed these new colors of the year 2018! Do you think you will try to incorporate either of them into your home? I would love to know!

My Own ‘Blue Moon’ Natural Area Rug

I’m back again today! One of my goals is to try and post more often. We’ll see how long I can keep it up! I’m so excited to tell you about today’s post! I have been in contact with Natural Area Rugs and they were kind enough to send me one of their fabulous rugs!  “Natural Area Rugs offers the best quality natural fiber area rugs and carpets on the market. We offer a wide range of products, including those coming in unique as well as traditional colors and designs to meet every customer’s needs. We offer one of the widest ranges of high-quality floor coverings on the market, at prices that can fit everyone’s budget.” Customers also receive a free rug pad with a purchase.

I spent a lot of time looking through all the different types of rugs. You can order a custom rug, jute, grass, sisal, a contemporary style and even stair treads. I finally  decided on Blue Moon Patchwork Rug under Vintage Oriental Rugs. I was expecting it to be more blue than what I normally use in my home, but I was in for a surprise! It is exactly the right shade of turquoise! It is so perfect! Take a look!

In the pictures it looks a little more grey, which is awesome too. It could be used in so many different styles of rooms from farmhouse and casual to more formal, or coastal, like mine.

I love the patchwork design.  Each square/rectangle has its own design. Some are more floral and some are more of a geometric design. It has the perfect vintage look!

The rug is very soft and feels great. The rug pad will ensure that it doesn’t slip around. The colors really enhance the colors in the room and all through the house.

I was amazed how fast it was shipped too. It came within two days of ordering and I couldn’t wait to open it up! There was no strange odors when I opened it and it lay flat as soon as I put it down.

I’m so happy with this rug! It is the perfect color for me and the size is great. I’m so happy I was able to work with Natural Area Rug! Please be sure to go check out the Natural Area Rug website.

Ideas for Winter Decor

Good morning!  We are into January and sometimes it is hard to know how to decorate once Christmas is over. The room look so bare and empty and it’s not really spring yet either. Especially when you have several feet of snow on the ground! But you can add some simple winter decor to your rooms to cozy them up a bit. I browsed through the internet a bit this week and found some great ideas!

Wisconsin Magpie came up with these great snowflake decorations. She used items she already had and put them all together in a creative way. I love these! They would be cute with a heart in them too for Valentines Day!

Yvonne over at Stonegable has 3 great winter wreaths! Doesn’t this pom-pom one looks so cozy and welcoming? I think I like this one the best.
