Master Bedroom Vintage Dresser Makeover with a White Wash

Good morning! I’m back this week with a mini makeover! I have been trying to decide what to do with this dresser for quite awhile now. I had scrolled through Pinterest and did searches looking for an idea for a mid-century dresser that wasn’t too mid-century. So easy, right? This dresser had been my aunt and uncles, then my sisters’ when we all lived at home and has been mine since I got married. I’m not sure of the exact age.

When we first got it, it was painted dark brown. My husband sanded it all down and then we just left it as is. The wood is very soft and dirt and oils had absorbed into the wood.

I think this darker spot was from some candle wax.

My cat also decided to use this corner as a scratching post.

Since the wood is so soft, I was able to sand it by hand and all the dirt and oils came off pretty easy.

The scratches were a little more difficult. Some of them were pretty deep. I sanded as much as I could, but I would have had to sand a lot of the wood away if I was going to get it as smooth as possible. I left it like this and thought it would work out okay.

I used Benjamin Moore Simply White and watered it down. You can’t really tell in the picture, but it is pretty watery.

I used very little on the brush and even wiped some off before I started painting.

Once my brush was ready, I started brushing it over the surface until it all looked even.

I would still like to do something with the mirror and my husband is working on some kind of frame. I’ll let you know what happens with it!

Doesn’t it look so pretty!

This little vintage dresser was my moms and aunts when they were little girls. It held their doll clothes and all my cousins and I used it too whenever we played at Grandma’s house.  I use it for jewelry now, but it holds lot of great memories.

I added a few turquoise touches and my seashells.

I’m really happy how this dresser turned out! It was a nice simple refresh for the bedroom. Thanks for coming by today!

I Moved to a New Apartment

Well everyone.  It has been a wonderful two years at my last apartment, but on Monday I moved to a new place.

It was a hard decision, but when I thought I would be moving in with some friends and that fell through, I had to find something else that worked.  So I looked at apartments to live by myself, but I didn’t think that I could afford it on how much I make a month.

So I turned to Craigslist where I found an ad for someone looking for another roommate.  I would have my own room, but share a bathroom with one other roommate.  And after meeting the girls and signing the lease, I moved all of my stuff in on Monday.

And here is what my new room looks like!

Bed and Gallery Wall

Okay, so that’s what my bed and wall looks like.  I put my bed in the corner of the room because I wanted the most room to add my other furniture.  My room is a lot smaller than my last room, so I had to really work to get everything to fit.  One of those things, is all of the artwork that I have.  So, mom told me that I needed to create a gallery wall.

Now, it’s not completely done, but here is what I have so far.

Bed and Gallery Wall 2

Yeah, so I still have a few things left to hang on my wall, like a chalkboard and two mirrors that fit in nicely with my other art.  I might also buy a S to go with the L on the wall.  Who knows?

On the other side of the room is where the rest of my furniture is.  I have this dresser that is filled to the brim with stuff.

Full Dresser

Doesn’t it look familiar?  If not, I’ll leave a link at the end of the post for the original blog post about this dresser.  But, I was finally able to use it and it fits all of the clothes.  Hooray!

I also have my bookshelf that was brought over from the other apartment.  And it is already filled with decor and books.

Bookshelf Decor

And yes, that is an unopened box of Cards Against Humanity on the bottom shelf.  I just need to find some people who would want to play it with me… But yeah, I have I ever mentioned that I like Paris and the Eiffel Tower and pink?  I think you can definitely tell just by looking at my room.

Finally for furniture, I have this TV stand that I had painted blue a few weeks ago when I still thought that I was moving in with my friends, not people on Craigslist.  Well, mom surprised me by painting it black, adding pink and white knobs on the front, and decorative paper on the bottom of the drawer and inside the doors.  Imagine my surprise when I saw that pull up to the new apartment instead of the blue one.

Extra Storage

I also hung my bow board up behind my bedroom door because I am sharing a bathroom and there isn’t space in the bathroom to hang it.  So, it is by my door so that way I can just grab a bow before I head out to work!

And finally the closet… Is it any bigger than the closet at my last apartment?  The answer is yes.  Not much, but yes it is bigger.  I don’t have a walk in closet anymore, but I have a lot more hanging room and storage for my tee shirts and work clothes.  So, I guess that I have a bigger closet?

Closet Space

So, yeah.  That’s my new space.  I really like it.  It makes me really think before I buy something big because I have to think about where I am going to put it.  Since I don’t have as large of a space like my last apartment, I have to be really careful.  But, I like it a lot and I am very grateful for not having to climb so many stairs.

A New Dresser…Finally!

So…do you remember a few weeks ago that I posted about a dresser that I was going to be posting soon?  Yeah…life got in the way and it didn’t exactly happen soon.

But I finally got it finished!

If you haven’t read the before post, please click here.

Before and After

before and after

I love the new look on this dresser.  Before it was a weird eggshell whitish yellow, a drawer was broken, and there was peeling paint all over.  Now, it looks like it could fit anywhere in someone’s house.

But it wasn’t all easy.

The first problem I ran into was the broken drawer.  With the help of my dad, we were able to get that fixed.  He also helped me fix the bottoms of the drawers so they wouldn’t fall apart.

When I was painting the dresser, I also ran into the problem that the paint didn’t cover the peeling paint on the top of the dresser.  When I was using the spray paint, it was two different tones because the wood would just soak up the paint.  So, I had to use a can of black paint instead of spray paint.  Thankfully, that worked and made the top of the dresser look nice.

My final problem came when I tried to put the new knobs on.  The space between the screws was wider than the original knobs, so I had to remeasure to make new holes.  After filling in the original holes and drilling in new holes, I was finally able to put the new knobs on.  Yeah!

The Drawers

The Drawers

The featured part of this dresser is the drawers.  They are all chalkboard, so you can write what you have in each drawer (examples: socks, pants, checkbook, undisclosed amounts of money…too much?), or write numbers like I did.  Numbers are really in right now, so that is why I picked them.

Another feature this that every pull for the drawers is different.  I bought all five of them at Junk Days and they all worked perfectly.  It’s a great way to make the drawers unique.

I love how this dresser turned out.  It has a very modern feel and is something that I can see myself putting in my house when I have my own one day.  Now, if only I can figure out what to do with it in the meantime.:)

Coming Soon! Dressing Up a Dresser

So, I’ve been a bit busy with work picking up.  Since it is summer, and everyone is leaving on vacation, they drop their dogs off at my work where it is my duty to help take care of them.  And even though I like having more hours at work, I now have to find a bit more time for the blog. Because of this, I am giving a sneak peak into what we will be showing off next week.  It is nothing special, but it was a fun project for my mom and I.

We have some work to do!

We have some work to do!

We found this dresser for free on Craiglist and picked it up right away.  We knew there were some problems with it, like mismatched handles and peeling paint and a broken drawer.

It’s taken awhile but I think we finally have a plan of what we want to do with it. We bought some new drawer pulls at the junk sale we went to last weekend and the drawer has been fixed. Now on to the fun part!  We will let you know how it turns out! Stay tuned!
