Fabric Pumpkin Makeover

Happy 3 Day Weekend (for those who get one!)!  This post is late today because I am busy trying to get my house cleaned up and ready for fall!  I don’t have much time during the week, so I figured this was my time to get moving on it. I feel like I accomplished quite a bit, but I didn’t get the blog done for this morning. But it’s here now!

I found these 2 (very) bright orange fabric pumpkins at a thrift store. There really wasn’t much out yet at the stores I usually go to. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with these, but I figured something would come to mind. I talked with the girls and we came up with a few ideas.

I started with the small one. Haley suggested turquoise with orange polka-dots, where the dots start out full at the top and then becomes less and less. So I went through my paint stash and started with some colors that I mixed. It did not turn out as bright as Haley was thinking. So, I looked again and found some old poster paint in bright turquoise. It ended up being the perfect color! Here are my different attempts:

Much better color! I added a little more turquoise with some purple mixed in for the stem. After seeing the turquoise, my mind totally went in a different direction than polka-dots! Do you do that? Change your mind part way through a project? All. The. Time!

I decided to add some string around the pumpkin where the previous string was. I picked a navy blue, although it looks kind of purple.

I just put some hot glue on the old string and laid the new string over the top.

Here is a little clue to how I ended up decorating the pumpkin. These are a few of the embellishments that I used.

Then I added some glittery silver filigree washi tape that I found at Walmart. Sorry I don’t have the package to show you. I had already opened it for another project. Isn’t is pretty!

Haley loves peacocks and we had decorated her graduation party in a peacock theme. You can see it here. I had a few feathers left over, so it worked out great.

I just loved how they both turned out! Have been decorating for fall yet?

Corner News-9/4/15

Hey everyone!  It is Friday!  Hip hip hooray!  It the end of the week and onto the weekend, where everyone can relax.  So, here is what has been going on in my world this week.

I started school last week…bleh…can it be over yet?  If you didn’t know, I am a Kinesiology major and I would love to graduate with a degree in Exercise Science.  I am hoping that will happen in the next school year, or maybe the fall semester.

Also, I started my own Periscope!  Not only am I do the #SeptemberScopers challenge with my mom for the blog, but I am going to try to vlog…livestream…scope…whatever it’s called everyday as well.  So please follow both our Periscope accounts to get double the fun!

And finally, I have been making more signs like I made for my coworker Kelli.  I made this one for my coworker Lola.

And this one for my coworker Braydan.

And I have more orders in the works!  If enough people are interested in these signs, I might start an Etsy account to sell them for others.  Let me know if you would be interested so we can get that ball rolling if needed!

Well, that’s all that happened these past two weeks.  Hope you have a great weekend and see you all next week!

#SeptemberScopers

It is officially September, which means that leaves are falling, weather is changing, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back at Starbucks (for any of you into that), and new challenges for blogging.

periscope-logo

Working Mom Magic has started the #SeptemberScopers Challenge.  This is using the app Periscope where someone can livestream from their phone.  This livestream can be 5 minutes or it can be an hour, whichever you prefer.  This app is connected with Twitter, so you can tell your Twitter followers when you went live on Periscope.  It is awesome!

So Working Mom Magic has set up certain things that you can talk about on your scope, but it isn’t limited to just that!  You can talk about whatever you want!  Hooray!

And, mom and I have taken the challenge.  Well…more me than mom, but it is still both of us.  I have posted a livestream the past two days and will try (biggest and most important word) to post a livestream everyday on from that.  The times will be a little skewed because of work and school schedules, but I will post on Twitter when I go live!

Finally, please check us out on Periscope.  Our username is @homeonthecorner, so please follow us and give our livestreams hearts.  I also have a personal Periscope, @yoyorocks99.  Follow both of these account to see more of what mom and I go through for the blog!

Corner News Friday August 28, 2015

Happy Friday everyone! I survived my first week back in the classroom and I think the kids did too!! Just kidding. I think this is going to be a great class. They are smart and are learning the routine very quickly. I am excited about this year.

I did manage to get a couple little projects done. Here is one. I have had this little doggy since I was in college (I will spare you how many years ago this was!), but she was in need of a little update. Spray paint to the rescue! Here she is before:

And after! Just some plain black glossy paint updated her to the new era!

We also went to watch our local baseball team, courtesy of my husband’s company. The guys have been so safe at work, they and their families were treated to a night out. The team pulled out a win in the 10th inning! They have played great all season. I think they were trying to make it last a little longer by going into extra innings!

Two weekends ago we enjoyed some time at our favorite beach. Here is just one of the bunches of pictures I took of the beautiful sunset.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!

Blanket of Memories

As we get older, we get rid of things that may have a lot of meaning to us.  Maybe it’s an old tee shirt from a charity event that you helped with and it doesn’t fit anymore.  Or maybe it’s a baseball that you received from a foul ball at a baseball game.  Or maybe it’s a toy that you had a child that you don’t have room for anymore.

This was something Haley did.  While cleaning her room, she decided that she wanted to get rid of old tee shirts.  But, these tee shirts had memories and things that she had enjoyed when she was in high school.  There were old track shirts, 4-H shirts, and other shirts from her favorite things like tech crew and volunteering.

So, creativity ensued, taking these memories to turn them into something beautiful.

I took all the shirts and cut them so that I could get the design that I wanted off of the shirt.  I wanted them in squares so it was easier to make a blanket.  But, there was one shirt that was a little bit more difficult because the picture was bigger the rest.  Urgh…

Tee Shirt Quilt

First Layout

Once I had all the pieces from the shirts, I bought thin interfacing and a mature black and white fleece for the back.  I didn’t pick something really thick because Haley gets hot really quickly.

I then ironed all the tee shirts to the interfacing and started to lay out the tee shirts into the design that I wanted.  I wanted a slight pattern to make sure that all of black shirts weren’t on the same side.  Also, I tried to have a shirt from high school, a shirt from track, a shirt from 4-H, and a random shirt on every row.

Interfacing

Then the sewing began!

2nd Layout

I sewed the pieces together to get the finished product.  I first sewed the panels together in the rows, making four individual rows.  I then sewed the four rows together to make the entire front of the quilt.  I then sewed the front of the quilt to the fleece for the back.  As a final step, I sewed the corners of where the panels met to the fleece.  I did that as a small security so that the front and back didn’t separate all the time.

And here is the final product!

Haley's Tshirt Quilt

Haley's Tshirt Quilt Squares

It looks so good!  As you can see, I changed the layout yet again.  I felt like this was the most conducive look and it turned out really good.  I love how there are no colors that line up and there is a different shirt in each row.  I also had to make one of the shirts in the row with the Pirates of the Caribbean shirt skinnier so they would fit.

This was an easy project that I thoroughly enjoyed working on.  And the best part is that Haley absolutely loves it and uses it all the time…when she is actually cold.
