DIY Headboard to Faux Fireplace Reveal

I’ve always loved the look of a fireplace. Unfortunately, I have never lived in any house, even growing up, that had one! I am so deprived :)! So after scouring Pinterest and all the blogs I follow, I decided I should try and make my own sometime. This past summer, Lauren and were at Goodwill and came across this headboard for only $3.99! Sold! There were two, and I probably should have bought both of them, but I was so excited to just find one! Then it sat for quite awhile. It always takes me time to think about how this is going to work and exactly how I want it to look.

Faux Fireplace Headboard

We took off one of the pieces that was under the shelf. I found some more pieces of wood at another Goodwill that had scallop across one side and decided that would work too. Yes, they are bright turquoise, but everything will get a few coats of paint.

I added a little extra to the bottom too. I had these ornaments from last year that I never did anything with, so I glued them up near the top to add some interest to the piece.

After patching all the holes, I gave it a couple coats of paint.

Faux Fireplace Patched up

We added a thin piece of plywood to the back which I painted black. We also added a board along each edge in the back so it would sit flush on the wall since we have 6 inch baseboards. So here it is!

I am so pleased with how this turned out!

Faux Fireplace Reveal

It was different to decorate a mantle, but I am looking forward to all the different ways to style it.

Here are the Christmas ornaments I never used last year. I’m so glad I could find a good use for them! I made the acorn garland by hot gluing acorns from my yard onto a piece of twine.

My mom and dad found this box in a dumpster. Um, yes please! It’s perfect here for now.

It won’t be long until this is all decorated for Christmas. I am also wanting some kind of heater for inside so my doggies and I can cuddle up in front of it when it gets cold. It will be the perfect spot!

I hope you enjoyed the reveal! I’m so glad it is done and ready to go! Now on to the next projects!

Corner News-November 6, 2015

Good morning! This post is really late.  First of all, I totally forgot it was my turn to post. Lauren reminded me Thursday evening, but I had a meeting that night and didn’t get it done. Then I worked Friday and when I got home, my computer started acting up. So now I am on Haley’s laptop trying to get this done! So beyond all that…here is Corner News!

Of course, our puppy again! This picture was just too precious not to post!

I also thought I would share a couple of our Halloween costumes. Several people wanted to see the Mary Poppins costume, so here it is. It was dark already, but hopefully you get the idea.

Fall Cookie Decorating Tablescape

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Where the cookies are baking and everyone’s telling you decorate!  It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Props to everyone who just sang this tune.

Now, I’m not someone who jumps from Halloween to Christmas, but one thing that I love about fall is decorating cookies.  And because my roommate Danielle loves to bake, and happened to bake a batch of cookies, I just had to decorate my table to decorate cookies!

So, here it is!

fall tablescape

We had a pretty fall tablecloth that had leaves all over it, so I went with a very neutral theme.  I had white plates and mugs and kept a knife on each plate so each person could decorate their own cookie.

I added chocolate and strawberry frosting to the decorating items and whipped cream, because you know cookies are the best with whipped cream!  I also found some candy that was on sale after Halloween.  They can be used for extras decor for the cookies.

So here is my table, I just need more items to decorate the cookies with!  But, I love how it is simple and cute.  Are any of you going to decorate cookies?

Thrift Store Metal Medallion Makeover

It’s November! The weather is finally cooler here, at least in the mornings and evenings. And we have finally had some much needed rain! It’s been wonderful! This type of weather brings back memories of the sound of the chainsaw as my dad trimmed the trees in the back yard. My sister and I would use the cut branches to make forts over the swing-set. Of course, it only lasted a day. My dad would take the branches, cut them up and cart them away.

Don’t forget, we are co-hosting over at Merry Monday Link Party this week. Check out what other bloggers are doing. Click here.

I found these metal medallions at the local Goodwill a couple of week ago. I knew right away what I wanted to make (for once!). I had found some chalk paint at Walmart made by Waverly and wanted to try it out.

Metal Medallion Makeover

I bought the white chalk paint and painted two coats on each medallion.

After the paint had dried, I used the Waverly Antique wax to spread on the raised areas.

I put a little on a rag, wiped some off on the paper I was using to protect the floor and then went over each piece, lightly.

I went over the edges too. After is was covered, I kept rubbing to buff it out a little bit.

Metal Medallion Antique Waxing

Here are all three! I like how each one is a little different and I really like how they turned out.

I had never used an antiquing wax before, but I really like it. It gives it a little bit of a farmhouse look.

Here you get a little peek of my faux fireplace. It’s almost done! I will be showing it off next week!

My name is Ruthie, I was born and raised in the Midwest. I met the man of my dreams in Nashville, TN and decided to follow him back home to California. First came love, then came marriage, then came the baby in the baby carriage. We have a beautiful little girl named Lucy. My husband got a new job when Lucy was 2 months old and we packed up and moved half way across the country to Minnesota, back to my homeland. We bought a house that needed a little TLC, so here I am! I created this blog to share my journey of home ownership and my passion for furniture restoration. While creating my dream home I also love to spend time with my family, sing barbershop and teach littles about music!

Welcome our Co-Host

Meet Lauren & Pamela of Home on the Corner, two of our new Co-Hosts for the next two weeks.

Hello! We are Lauren and Pam Smith, a mother/daughter blogger duo who love to create together. Pamela is a wife, mom, teacher, organizer, and crafter. I love to decorate my home in a beachy, but neutral style, finding things at thrift stores and garage sales, and then making them my own. I like creating and scrap-booking. Our family is dog crazy (we have three) and likes to travel, especially to the beach where I can collect more seashells! My style is always evolving and I enjoying trying new things in my home. Lauren is a college student whose dream is to be an animal physical therapist. I enjoy sipping on Carmel Apple Spice drinks from Starbucks or Pink Star smoothies from Jamba Juice. Pink paint always seems to stay on my hands and the Eiffel Tower continues to decorate my bedroom. I have too much fabric in my closet and not enough time to use all of it. We hope you will come by and pay us a visit!
