Recycle a Sweater for Home Decor

Good morning! The days and nights are getting chillier! I do like fall, but I am not looking forward to winter. I don’t like the cold, dark and dreary days and the way it get dark so early. I am looking forward to the holidays though and being with my sweet family!

Have you ever recycled a piece of worn out clothing into something for your home? Sounds kind of crazy, but I have done this a few times. Mostly to make pillows out of, but this time I did something different. This sweater had a hole in the neckline, so it wasn’t wearable, but I liked the stripes and the colors of the fabric, so I chose to make a small stuffed pumpkin pillow with it.

I found a pumpkin pattern online and printed it out. Then I traced it onto the sweater with a piece of chalk.

I cut through both layers of the fabric so I would have two identical pieces. I sewed the pieces together, leaving an one inch opening at the bottom.

I stuffed the pumpkin and then hand stitched the opening closed. I cut out a stem from felt and found some embroidery thread in the same yellow color.

This part was a little difficult, but I stitched lines through all the layers using a long stitch. It was kind of hard keeping nice stitches, but with all the puffiness, you can’t really tell. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

Whew! Made it! Now just add the stem. I glued mine, but you could stitch it on too.

Once the pumpkin was finished, I placed it on my mantle with a few other fall items.

It gives a little spot of color in an otherwise neutral mantle.

I would love to know if you have recycled any clothing to create some home decor! Let me know! Have a wonderful day!

How To Use Spray Paint for Home Decor

Good morning! I posted this last year, but figured it wouldn’t hurt to put it out there again for you all!

Summer time is my time to get some larger projects done at home. We are finishing up a lot of the work in the living room and I am so pleased with how it is turning out! What a huge difference flooring and opening up spaces does to a room. I can’t wait to show you all! I have a few more things to finish up and then it will be ready to go!

How to use spray paint for your home decor

Last week, my favorite blogger, KariAnne, from Thistlewood Farms, blogged about spray painting different items for your home. Please hop over and take a look! I started thinking about all the items I have spray painted. In fact, my mom laughs at me when I say, ‘Just spray paint it!” 🙂 So I thought I would make my own list too. Some of the items are the same as Karianne’s, but most are different. There are just so many options!

1. Frames

I have painted SO many frames!! I find the outdated ones with fancy woodwork on them at the thrift store, take them home and spray paint them. You can paint them any color to match your decor. I have made mine into chalkboards, Christmas decor, or gasp! an actual frame!

2. Outdoor Furniture

Spray paint is a great way to refresh our outdoor furniture. The furniture can get faded and worn over time and this revives it. Be sure to clean the pieces well before painting. These Adirondack chairs are plastic and were a hunter green color, so I pulled out my favorite turquoise color and they look great! In fact, I just repainted them a couple of weeks ago! I also used spray paint on the metal furniture. Black is a great basic color and makes them look fresh and clean.

3. Dishes

I wouldn’t recommend actually using these painted dishes to eat off of, but its great for decor pieces. The pitcher had an 80’s design on it, but a few coats of white spray paint and it is up to date.

4. Home Decor

Do you have a vase you really like, but the color doesn’t go with your decor? Or find a piece in the thrift store, but it doesn’t match? That’s right! Paint it! This cow was too cute to pass up. A fresh coat of white paint, and she is perfect!

5. Indoor Furniture

I have painted beds, dressers, chairs and so many other furniture pieces. I usually paint larger pieces by hand. But if the piece is rattan or wicker, spray paint is so much easier. It can get into all the little spaces better than a brush. I used white spray paint on this rattan table for my living room.

6. Lamps

Again, wicker is so much easier to paint with spray paint. You can also use paint for the base of an outdated table lamp. Put a pretty new shade on it and you are all set.

7. Wooden Signs

I spray painted the background on this sign and then hand painted the letters. This will work for any piece of wood. On the second sign I added chip letters to form the word ‘Laundry.”

8. Planters

I made these planters years ago from a concrete block, but I have also painted regular ceramic or plastic flower pots. Spray paint is great for covering any type of surface!

Good morning! I have been busy this week setting up my classroom, as much as possible anyways. I showed up yesterday morning and my whole classroom was outside in the courtyard! They are cleaning carpets today, but moved everything out yesterday! It was very interesting trying to find things so I could get some work done. Then today, we won’t be able to put our stuff back in until 4:00 and then there is church tonight in the classrooms! Plus Open House tomorrow! Whew! I’m tired just thinking about it. It will get done, eventually.

Parisian Style Brass Coffee Table From Chairish

Parisian Coffee Table

Hello everyone!  I hope you all have had a great week and are ready to take on the weekend.  Maybe it’s time for a change around your houses and you are redecorating, so hopefully this will give you some ideas!
You may remember that we did a post for Chairish showing how we would style an armoire.
It was so much fun to put together and imagine what it could look like! If you don’t remember, click here to read that post.  Well,  we were asked to do another post, so of course we said yes!

This time we worked with a coffee table.  We found this trunk that could function as a coffee table, and we loved it.  It is a brassy color which would work really well when it comes to decorating. This could add some sparkle to your room!

But what do you put on your coffee table to make it look nice, but also be functional?  I mean, your table could be your centerpiece of your living room, so why not make it look amazing!  One of the first things I do is decide the theme.  And, I love anything Parisian (this is a common known fact on this blog), so I went with a French theme.  I started with this bowl from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  I love the look of the bowl, and it can be filled with many different things.  I decided that I would put pink and white beads in the bottom of the bowl and silk flowers to add some accents.  Bowls can be filled with whatever you like, so it is up to you! Trays would be a good choice too. Trays can hold lots of things, but keep them contained and looking neat.
The next thing that I went with was some boxes to hold items in.  This can be important when it comes to holding the precious TV remotes and maybe even some coasters.  The boxes that I found are actually jewelry boxes. They have interchangeable bottoms so you can change them with your theme or color scheme. How cool is that! This works perfectly to hold the Fleur de Lis coasters and make sure they don’t all get separated.
And finally, I added an Eiffel Tower statue.  This piece is to help add some height and interest to your decor, but it’s not too tall to get in the way.  I also added a pink candle to make your room smell nice.  This is important because your table will have decorations, but it won’t be too busy and take away from the beauty of the table.

Here is the style board again just to remind you how beautiful it is!
Just a couple more tips-use odd numbers when displaying things on tables and use varying heights. This add more interest and is pleasing to the eye. But most of all, have fun with it! Keep playing with it until it pleases you. It’s your own design!

I hope you enjoyed reading about my coffee table that I designed.  If you want to check out any of the items that I put on this blog, click on the link by their pictures.  We are so happy to have the opportunity to work with Chairish again! Be sure to check out their website and tell them we said ‘Hello!’
